Sohmas x Reader

"_____~" A very creepy but familiar voice said behind me.

"Hey Maki." I said blandly. The voice behind me huffed and even without looking I could tell he was crossing his arms. "You're no fun Bird Girl."

If it weren't for my head currently looking for my history book, I would've smacked him.

"Anyways I have some juicy news." This boy was always one for gossip. And I was always the one to hear about it. Not that it mattered though. My 'little friends' usually told me the most important things that went on around the multi-grade campus. "There's a new group of kids in school."

I groaned. "Kind of busy right now. You know. Head searching."

Maki pulled me out of my locker. "That body we put in there is already buried." A grin on his face showed his lie and my smile matched his.

"How could I forget?" I mocked and pretended to swoon. "Those jeans will never get washed."  We took one honest look at each other before laughing. "No. I was looking for my history book." I said scratching my head. I know I had it when I came to school that morning.

"Someone must've taken it." Maki pulled out a book from his backpack with a grin on his face. That sly bastard. I quickly retrieved the book and proceeded to smack him with it repeatedly.

"I told you Maki! When she says no it means no!" A classmate of ours playfully yelled on their way past us.

I smiled and dragged Maki away toward the lunchroom.  "So the new students?" I asked him. He looked confused for a moment but smiled.

"Well they seem to be from the same family. Although none of them -. _____?" Maki paused looking at my shoulder where a small sparrow had decided to land.

'Sohmas!' It chirped and my eyes narrowed.

"What's wrong?" Maki asked and I shook my head as we turned the corner into the cafeteria. I was lucky Maki couldn't communicate with birds like I could. "Anyways. Hey, there they are. Kyo! Yuki! Hatsuaru!" Maki waved over to an odd looking group.

"Hello Maki." A purple haired individual said as we walked up to them. "This must be _____. My name is Yuki." He held out his hand and I shook it nicely.

"Hello Yuki." I greeted looking at Maki. I didn't really do well with physical contact and handshakes were rare for me.

"You wanna go you dumb cow!"

"I don't think you handle this you stupid cat!"

Looking behind Yuki I could see a fight starting with the other two. The orange haired one and the black and white haired boy looked like they were about to have the battle of the century. And lets just say I was in the mood to be entertained. So I sat back and watched.

"Kyo! Haru! You know you shouldn't fight in school." A brunette walked up in the middle of things and ruined the mood. The orange haired one took one look at her and ran away like the wind. The girl took one look at us before running after him yelling "Kyo!"

'Haru' however took one look at me and made his advancements. Lust or rage in his eyes, I couldn't quite tell which. "You're cute. How about we skip the small talk and have some fun?" He was close enough that I could see he wasn't feeling rage anymore. But before I could have him in a death grip, Maki stepped in-between us. "Touch my girlfriend and you won't be the one having 'fun'." The seriousness in his voice made me cringe. Before Haru could say anything Maki grabbed my arm and dragged me out into the bright day of June.

"Wow tough guy. I'm impressed." I said once we were away.

Maki smiled again and his 'toughness' facade had melted. "Hey I swore to keep your secret and you swore to pretend to be my girlfriend." He said putting his hands behind his head "I can't have the newbies going around stealing my girl."

I giggled. Maki could be tough when he wanted to be but he was a sweetheart through and through. That's why I was glad he found out my 'secret side'. "So, wanna ditch this lecture on the History of American war and go to the yogurt shop?"

He looked slightly offended. I couldn't tell if it was because I, the straight A student, suggested his favorite subject or that I said yogurt. "You have to ask?" Smiling I grabbed his hand and we headed off.

****One day of cat-nip induced time-skip~~****
"So how was class yesterday?" My aunt asked over the phone. She was currently on-tour with one of her clients so I had the house to myself. And I was enjoying every minute of it.

"It was fine." The microwave dinged and I pulled out my bowl of ramen noodles. "Got an A on my exam, there was almost a fight between some of the new lower-classmen and Maki protected me from some pervert."

I heard her sigh through the phone. "_____ I think it's great that Maki knows and is willing to keep your secret that you're one of the twelve but- "

"'But it's time we erased his memory and get me home schooled.'" I repeated. Now it was my turn to sigh. "The only reason I'm in school is so that I live a normal life Aunt Jackie. I can't be kept caged up like a bird."

"But that's the thing." She stressed. "You're the Year of the Rooster. A bird my dear." There was a pregnant pause and someones voice was muffled through the phone. "Look, we'll talk about this some more later. I have another call waiting." With that she hung up and I silently yelled at the house phone. If I could reach through the phone I would strangle her.

Yes, I am the Year of the Rooster. Yes, if I'm hugged by the opposite sex, i.e. Maki, I turn into a bird. Which from my understanding was supposed to be a rooster but I guess legends get things wrong sometimes. I looked down at my ramen not really feeling hungry anymore but I ate it anyways. If I can turn into a raven instead of a rooster, why can't I live a normal life? I mean, that's why mom sent me and Aunt Jackie away, right? So I don't have to live by the rules of the family I never knew. So I could live a normal life.

A knock at my door interrupted my contemplations on this thing I called life. "_____!" Maki yelled through the door and I waved him off as if he could see me. After a few moments of letting him stand out there I opened the door and let him though. Along with Kyo, the orange haired one from yesterday. "Hey Maki. Kyo." I greeted as I sat on the couch.

The minuet the boys walked in, Jade, my green canary, started going insane inside her half opened cage.  Saying something about 'cat' this and 'cat' that. I mentally told her to calm down but she wouldn't stop. Instead she flew out and circled Kyo's head a few times before landing on my lap, feathers ruffled and all. "I am so sorry about her." I said not having the words. "Jade's never done this before. She's only like this around cats."

Kyo's face flushed for a moment and returned back to normal. "It's OK. Stray cats seem to love me." Although that last part was slightly dipped in sarcasm I ignored it and went on with what I wanted to say before Jades episode. "What seems to bring you here Kyo?"

Scratching the back of his head it looked as though the cat had gotten his tongue. "I heard from Maki you're good in English and I was wondering..uhh."

"If I could help you." I smiled. It wasn't uncommon for classmates to ask me to tutor them in some subjects. Being the 'wise rooster' does have it's perks sometimes. "It's fine. Do you have your books?" Although it was the weekend and all, there was no harm in getting schoolwork done while helping someone out. We quickly started on the work and soon the brunette, whose name I learned was Tohru, and Yuki came over to join in.

"Hope that helped." I said to them  closing the door. I turned to see Maki sprawled on the couch, his face in the history book "What are you doing?"

Maki chuckled and uncovered his eyes. “Absorbing knowledge. Isn't that what you do?”

He could be an idiot at times but he was my best friend. Jade was starting to flutter around again but this time she was at the window. “Can you,  you know, communicate with birds?” Maki asked getting upright.

“Yeah.” I said scratching my head. “But they choose not to listen sometimes.” I walked over to see what the fuss was about. She wouldn't stop saying 'cat' and 'Sohma'. Glancing around the area I could see Yuki, Kyo and Tohru in the middle of an ally, probably on their way home. The two boys were fighting with poor Tohru stood trying to defuse the situation. Or at least from what I could see she was trying to.

“I guess the whole family has tempers with each other.” I informed Maki and he got up to join me at the window. We watched as Kyo and Yuki threw punches at each other. The looks I was getting from Maki told me he wanted to try and stop it but I shook my head. Their internal problems weren't ours to meddle with.

And that's when it happened.

Tohru panicked and hugged Kyo. A cloud of orange smoke clouded them and when it cleared I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Tohru was with an orange tabby who seemed to be irritated with being hugged. Tohru quickly backed up and Yuki folded his arms, smiling at the scene.

“Did he just-?” Maki asked and I nodded.

The 'new family' was now on my list of people to hide from.
I got bored and since all my Hetalia stories are lost on a flash drive somewhere. I just thought of the name Maki as a friend so if you don't like it you're more than welcome to change the name. It's you're friend after all.

Fruits Basket belongs to Natsuki Takaya. Or at least I think it does.
The plot is mine.
